Hi, hello, and how the heck are you! Welcome back to the annals of history and another trip from one side of the past to the other. Granted we’ll be taking a scenic route as we discuss hedonistic Greeks, logical Franciscans, a heretical Pope, an unfortunate construction project, Polish kings, Russian Tsars, and Swiss scientists. We’ll talk about the meaning of existence, the secret of life, and then we’ll just drop out.

You don’t need artificial euphoria when you can just get High On Life.

Time for another wild ride through history! This time we begin in Ancient China with a repeating crossbow, explore more northerly kingdoms, invent modern writing, deal with pirates, have a couple of wars, deal with a monarch, meet a legend, and then just maybe we’ll give peace a chance.

See, I told you it’d be a heck of a ride. After all we’ve got to go Here, There, And Everywhere.

Note: My computer recently recovered from a rather nasty crash that took out the video card and an external drive. Because of that, there are a couple of sound glitches in the episode. My apologies for this and the computer situation is currently being addressed… with a hammer.

Hi all, and welcome to the show!

We’re off on a truly globe spanning historical adventure this time as we discuss how Egyptian pyramids, Greek historians, Persian mailmen, butt kissing British poets, international trade, samurai, taxes, Ben Franklin, and pneumonia have to do with the cultish devotion to… a soft drink?

Sure it sounds strange now, but it’s really all about Building a Following.

If I’m counting things correctly, this is the tenth episode of Hyperlinked History! Who would’ve thought I’d squeeze ten episodes out of this thing? I wanted to throw out a quick thank you to all who’ve listened and I hope you’re enjoying the series at least half as much as I enjoy making it. Big thanks to Stephen, Blake, and the gang at LISNews too! You can’t find better folks to work with.

This time around, join me as we take a ride from today’s promise of the future to the distant past, over 3,600 years ago. Along the way we’ll fly with the Hubble Space Telescope, meet an Austrian scientist, have a couple of revolutions, commit regicide, try communism, play tennis, visit some Gothic churches, liberate Sicily, and visit a library even older than Alexandria.

When you’re taking such a long trip, you’ve really got to have a good Starting Point.

My sincere apologies for the tardiness on this episode. We had a family issue come up that necessitated traveling and the chaos that goes with it, so I’m just now getting it online.

This time around, The Faceless Historian ushers you down the aisle of history with some key stops in (THIS… IS…) Sparta(!). Then he provides a dash of poetry and weird books before introducing you to a daughter and a unicycling scientist. Where does it end? Well, I suppose you could use Google to find out.

Sometimes, you don’t even know if there is barbarian At The Gates.

As always you can…

concrete_ears_2Sometimes, history is funny in how something comes along that sounds like a lovely idea, but then right after it gets some use, it’s immediately replaced with something better.

Take these fantastic structures located in Denge, along the east coast of the UK. These things are called acoustic mirrors. The idea was that sound entering the bowl shaped building would be reflected and concentrated onto a microphone located at the centre. That way, approaching hostile aircraft might be heard in time to give a warning to the reasonably nervous citizens who were fearful of an invasion from across the channel.

And they worked! They worked very well. But they kind of remind you of a radar dish don’t they?

Well… now you know what replaced them. Pity, they’re far more visually attractive.

We have a bit of a special episode for you this time around! Last month, I was chosen to speak at the third Ignite Phoenix event. To fit my talk into the time allowed, I had to pare down the essay to its barest essentials. So this time around, I’m presenting to you the original work, uncut.

So, if you haven’t seen the video of my performance, you can find out why we’re just now catching up with the Ancient Romans, at least on one small technological front. And if you have seen the video, I hope you enjoy the full presentation.

For all you library types with a passion for your profession, you could do a lot worse than promoting it in front of a group of people willing to hear you out. If you have an Ignite event in your area, you might want to submit a presentation. After all, it’s only five minutes.

A new episode of Hyperlinked History is live and online for your historical listening pleasure!

Welcome once again to the pages and stages of history where number crazy mystics meet musicians and mingle with warrior women who offer something of value to early 20th century warfare before that gets taken apart by an Anglicanized American with a penchant for carnival rides.

Sound weird?

Well, it wouldn’t be the first time someone accused me of Irrational Behaviour.

Last week I was thrilled to speak to a huge group of people at the third Ignite Phoenix event. Unfortunately my parents missed watching it online because they were showing the house. To be honest, I don’t mind… especially if they sell the house.

So for them, and for others who might care to see it, here’s the video of my five minutes of fame at Ignite Phoenix! Big shout outs to Clintus over at I Do It Digital for his fine work and for taking the time and energy to shoot the event!
